Early life
Who is Lyman Hall? Lyman Hall was born on April 12, 1724 in Wallingford, Connecticut. He was the fourth child born to John Hall and Mary Street. He had three older siblings and four younger siblings. He grew up in Connecticut and went to Yale University. While he was in college, he studied theology. After he graduated from college he decided to study medicine and become a doctor.

Early life
Who is Lyman Hall? Lyman Hall was born on April 12, 1724 in Wallingford, Connecticut. He was the fourth child born to John Hall and Mary Street. He had three older siblings and four younger siblings. He grew up in Connecticut and went to Yale University. While he was in college, he studied theology. After he graduated from college he decided to study medicine and become a doctor.
How Hall came to Georgia
Hall continued to study to be a doctor after he graduated from college. In 1756 Hall moved to South Carolina to continue to study to be a doctor. He lived there for four years before he moved to Georgia. In 1760 Hall bought land in Georgia near the Midway Meeting House. He built a plantation on his new land. |
Government After Hall moved to Georgia, he was active in the Revolutionary Movement. As a result of this he was elected into the second Continental Congress in 1775. He represented Philadelphia but he did not vote because he did not represent the entire colony. A year later he returned to Georgia to be a representative there. While he was in Georgia, he signed the Declaration of Independence. He was one of the three Georgians to sign the Declaration of Independence. The other two Georgians were Button Gwinnett and George Walton. |
Revolutionary War During the Revolutionary War, Hall lived in Savannah. Later the war spread to Savannah and a lot of his property was destroyed. Because of this he returned back to his family in Connecticut. He stayed in Connecticut during the rest of the war so he would not be affected because of the war. After the war he returned back to Savannah and moved back to his old land. |
Governor of Georgia
After Hall moved back to Georgia he was elected to be part of the House of Assembly. In 1783 Hall was elected to be the governor of Georgia. He went through many difficulties. Examples where bankruptcy and problems with Native Americans. His main highlight as governor was he helped start the University of Georgia in 1785. That same year his term for being a governor ended and he sold his plantation.
Final Years
After he was governor, he became a judge for one year. After that, he retired and lived a private life. He worked to improve the agriculture in the state. On October 19, 1790 Hall died when he was 66 years old. Today Hall County is named after him and he is remembered as a Georgian who signed the Declaration of Independence.
