Hernando de Soto
After the new world was discovered, many people wanted to settle in this land and claim it for their own country. Around 1530, Hernando de Soto wanted to do the same thing. He wanted to claim land for Spain. He sailed to the coast of Florida and he and his crew marched north towards Georgia. They encountered Mississippian indians that were living there. De Soto wanted the land they were living on so they fought for the land. De Soto and his crew won because they had more advanced weapons, and they also had diseases that native Americans were not immune to. Because of this, the Mississippian period ended.
