Key Events of Civil War
Civil War is between the north and the south. The main reason for the civil war was the issue of slavery and states rights. It resulted in many lives being lost. The north defeated the south. The main role of Georgia in the war was it was the place where all the goods for the confederate soldiers were stored and became the leading place for the confederate states to get all the supplies that they need. These are some of the key events that took place during the civil war.
Antietam
The Battle of Antietam, a.k.a. Battle of Sharpsburg, resulted in not only the bloodiest day of the American Civil War, but the bloodiest single day in all of American history. Fought primarily on September 17, 1862, between the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek, it ended Gen. Robert E. Lee’s first invasion of a northern state.
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation is Lincoln's address to the north and the south after the first union victory. It was attempted to end the war by freeing all the slaves in the Confederate States of America. However, this was unsuccessful because he was not the president of the Confederate States of America, but it gave them hope.
Gettysburg
Gettysburg was the turning point of the war. This gave the north have a better chance of winning the war. This war was also the deadliest war fought in the Civil War since it had the most deaths.
Chickamauga
Chickamauga was the bloodiest battle fought in Georgia. This would have been a Confederate Victory, but Confederate General Braxton Bragg retreated his troops to early. This caused Union General William Sherman to invade Georgia and win the war.
Sherman's Atlanta Campaign
General Sherman burned Atlanta and invaded Georgia. Georgia was a major transportation center for the Confederacy. As Sherman planned, the Confederacy lost the transportation center which lost support for the war.
Union Blockade of Georgia Coast
As part of the Anaconda plan, the Union blocked ports in Georgia. This hurt the Confederacy because they could not export cotton. They also lost the support from Britain and France.
Battle of Sherman
Andersonville
Andersonville was a Union prison camp in Georgia. Many Union soldiers were arrested and sent to this prison camp. Many were treated unfairly by Henry Wirz and later died. Today Andersonville is now a memorial for those who were arrested while trying to save our country.
