Headright System
As people moved to Georgia, land had to be distributed. Because of this the Headright System started. This was a way to distribute lands that belonged to the Native Americans. This was also a way to get people to move to Georgia. Georgia's main resource was land which was something the other colonies did not have. In the Headright System, each family received 200 acres of land and each person received 50 acres of land.
Yazoo Land Fraud
As more people moved to Georgia, people became greedy for land. Because of this people bribed the governor for extra land. This became known as the Yazoo Land Fraud. As more people bribed the governor, the state could not afford to keep the land. As a result, Georgia gave up all land between the Mississippi and Chattahoochee Rivers.
Land Lotteries
After Georgia lost a large part of its land, they could not give extra land away easily. They started a land lottery to give away extra land. White men over 21 had a chance to win extra land using the land lottery. Veterans had a higher chance of winning the land. Since land was awarded by chance, not everyone won land. This is why the governor should not have taken bribes.
