but many black Georgians also fought for the Union. In 1864, Union general
William T. Sherman’s army invaded Atlanta, Georgia. In November 1864, Sherman
began his March to the Sea where he burned plantations and wrecked railroads. In
December 1864, Sherman captured Savannah. The Civil War ended in 1865.
