James Oglethorpe
In 1733, James Oglethorpe came to Georgia and worked on making it one of the 13 colonies. He lived in Savannah and he worked on getting support to make Georgia one of the 13 colonies. He set up a government in Georgia that involved the native americans in the area. He contributed to organize the town of Savannah. He created a militia with the african americans in the area. Without James Oglethorpe, we would not have the state of Georgia today.
Charter of 1732
In 1732 the colonists had to agree to certain rules. These rules were written in the charter of 1732. This charter said that the Trustees must be in charge and they made all the rules. The main rules were no slavery, no Catholics, no alcohol and no lawyers. The Colonists had to defend the colony. They also had a limit on land they could own.
Reasons for settlement
The main reasons for settlement were charity, economics, and defense. Charity meant that the people in debtors prisopn had to work to pay back their money. Economics refers to the changes in government. Defense means the colonists had to defend their colony from the spanish.
Tomochichi and Mary Muskgouve
After the first colonists arrived in Georgia, they needed a place to live. They came across land but the Yamacraw Indians already lived there. James Oglethorpe wanted to communicate with the Yamacraw leader Tomochichi but he did not know their language. Later he met Mary Muskgrove who was half English and half Yamacraw. She was able to translate for James Oglethorpe and Tomochichi and they were able to share the land.
City of Savannah
After they agreed to share the land they planned a city. This city was known as Savannah. It was the first city made in Georgia. It was also the first planned city in the new world.
